Jeff Lieber Special Guest - Transcript 6-9-13

The wonderful TV writer and showrunner Jeff Lieber agreed (on a last minute crazy tweet) to be our guest on TV Writer Chat. He was taking time away from his family to tweet with us, and wow what great information. He was only able to tweet for about 30 minutes of the chat. Thanks to @jeannevb I was able to get a transcript that reads chronologically. Yay!
Jeff said he'd come back later to answer questions he missed. If he does this, I'll add them to this transcript.
Again, I want to thank Jeff for his time and generosity! This was an incredible chat!

Hey @14shari

Jeffrey Lieber
@JeffLieber
Q. What's the worst and best advice you've been given about writing?

Mary Guzmán
@MaryGuzman
RT @JeffLieber: @authorJamie Every email I send is in my voice. Good advice.

Vivi Anna
@authorViviAnna
I love hearing stories like @jefflieber then realize that its really a crap shoot getting a job on TV

Jeffrey Lieber
@JeffLieber
Best advice... you're script will never be worse than it is now. So, don't be afraid to rewrite.

Gray Jones
@TVW_P
@JeffLieber Biggest mistakes you see young/budding writers making?

Jamie Livingston
@authorJamie
RT @JeffLieber Best advice... you're script will never be worse than it is now. So, don't be afraid to rewrite.  #scriptchat

Jeffrey Lieber
@JeffLieber
Worst: Make sure the network knows that only YOU can REALLY write your show. It was from a political asshole and I'm glad I...

Jeffrey Lieber
@JeffLieber
...didn't hire him.

Electrician Plus
@ElectPlusTVChat
@JeffLieber Best advice was to try to 'suck less' and shower more.

Chrysaleigh
@Chrysaleigh
@JeffLieber I was actually told not to rewrite something until after seeing it performed. I didn't listen, rewrote next day

Sean Campbell
@SeanCampbell
@JeffLieber You say that, but you can always add more CGI monkeys in a rewrite.

Sarah A Newman
@SarahAlexis4
@JeffLieber Q: Best lessons you've learned from your time in various writers' rooms? Advice for being new on a staff?

Jeffrey Lieber
@JeffLieber
Q: Biggest mistakes you see young/budding writers making?

Gray Jones
@TVW_P
@JeffLieber Worst advice: read Syd Field. Not a fan.

Jamie Livingston
@authorJamie
@JeffLieber Q: As a showrunner, what do you look for when hiring writers for the room?

Jeffrey Lieber
@JeffLieber
Trying to be PERFECT. Best thing you can do is stay out of your own way and write what you love.

Alphanote
@InfamousArts
Hey peeps, I'm in

Jeffrey Lieber
@JeffLieber
My first 2 scripts were small and personal and what caught on was my voice. Had I tried to write to the market, I wouldn't...

Rodney Myers
@DigitalRodney
@InfamousArts Heya Partner, did you get my email?

Jeffrey Lieber
@JeffLieber
...have made it.

Sharita
@14Shari

Alphanote
@InfamousArts
@DigitalRodney yes! Thanks for the notes! I got your coming tomorrow or Tuesday! Much appreciated

Jamie Livingston
@authorJamie
@JeffLieber Good to know. thanks.

Jeffrey Lieber
@JeffLieber
You're there to help the showrunner from going mad. REALLY. Anthing you can do to ease their crazy... is appreciated.

Sean Campbell
@SeanCampbell
@JeffLieber When you say skill sets you don't have, can you elaborate on that?

Jeffrey Lieber
@JeffLieber
Q: Q: how involved is a show runner in the selection of writers assistants?

Mike Morucci
@GCGeek
@JeffLieber I just have to say repeating the full Q before answering is unprecedented here and genius. #HonestlyNotSuckingUp

Rodney Myers
@DigitalRodney
@InfamousArts Not a problem, you have a great start, enjoyed reading it!

Jeffrey Lieber
@JeffLieber
Depends. I've let my long time assistant interview and bring me 3 candidates. Then I let staff weight in, cause they interact.

Jamie Livingston
@authorJamie
@GCGeek @JeffLieber It is! And I'm definitely sucking up. lol #HonestlyNotSuckingUp

Vivi Anna
@authorViviAnna
@GCGeek Oh Mike, you are too. Admit it! @JeffLieber #HonestlyNotSuckingUp

Jeffrey Lieber
@JeffLieber
Q: how often do you pitch an original series? Do you still write features?

Nikki Syreeta
@NikkiSyreeta
@jefflieber your first 2 movies were small. Is that the way to go when starting out? What if you have a blockbuster you wrote?

Jeffrey Lieber
@JeffLieber
All the time. Writing 2 now. 1 for mini studio Alcon, one for @gunnergale and F/X.

Ingrid Elkner
@IngridElkner
@JeffLieber I like how Glen Mazzara likens showrunning to being a band-master; writers are there to serve his musical vision.

Gray Jones
@TVW_P
@JeffLieber Q: some showrunners tell me they still read spec episodes. Others tell me only write pilots. You?

Jeffrey Lieber
@JeffLieber
As for film... rarely. Only when I feel like there's a really compelling reason. Takes too long. Yields shitty results.

Jeffrey Lieber
@JeffLieber
Q: some showrunners tell me they still read spec episodes. Others tell me only write pilots. You?

Bitter Script Reader
@BittrScrptReadr
Hey gang, @JeffLieber's dropping all kinds of knowledge on  right now

Jeffrey Lieber
@JeffLieber
Writing, for me, goes fast... its the figureing out WHAT to write that takes forever.

Jeffrey Lieber
@JeffLieber
That dialogue is the LAST thing to worry about. Concept/Character/Structure. Dialogue is for later.

Jeffrey Lieber
@JeffLieber
Plan FIRST. Rewrite LATER. Don't dive into something until you know everything you're going to do.

Nate Snyder
@Natespeare

Sean Campbell
@SeanCampbell
@IngridElkner I'm still a little confused how that works.

Mary Guzmán
@MaryGuzman
So Jeff was not down on contests but what do you all feel? With feature scripts contest wins help.

Gray Jones
@TVW_P
No current plans for a 2nd pilot program, but program leaders have been discussing.

authorViviAnna everyone remember that final scripts need to be finished by June 30. So get busy!! #tvwriterchat -10:29 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @ElectPlusTVChat I have a few 15 year olds... @Secretoriginz #tvwriterchat -10:29 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @IngridElkner I'd watch more procedurals if they were six minutes. That guy's the killer! See told you. Now back to Star Trek. #tvwriterchat -10:29 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @seancampbell. LOL no not your mom.... I pick a layman and a writer. The layman for the general public view #tvwriterchat -10:29 PM May 19th, 2013

ElectPlusTVChat @Secretoriginz I need an audience of 13 year old boys. #tvwriterchat -10:29 PM May 19th, 2013

scfMITO Also, I try to be disciplined but I know my creative process and I have to let it have it's way sometimes. #tvwriterchat -10:29 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @Tim_K_Aucoin Just have it done, but it would be good for you to share with someone to get feedback before rewriting. #tvwriterchat -10:29 PM May 19th, 2013

InfamousArts @SeanCampbell then I say throw out a line, I'll read it, that goes for anyone here if any need someone for a little feedback. #tvwriterchat -10:28 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell Alright guys, I gotta get back to work... Real work and later tonight back to work on some scriptage. Have a great night. #tvwriterchat -10:28 PM May 19th, 2013

Tim_K_Aucoin Do we have to submit the first draft to someone to read? Or just have it done? #tvwriterchat -10:28 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie Great idea. RT @NikkiSyreeta: @authorjamie ambush my inner editor with speed #tvwriterchat -10:28 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna I wouldn't let someone who hasn't read a script before read my 1st draft. They will not understand the nuances of the process #tvwriterchat -10:28 PM May 19th, 2013

ChristinaDM2066 @scfMITO so did The Shield #tvwriterchat -10:28 PM May 19th, 2013

IngridElkner Note to self: never try to write a 6 minute procedural again. haha #tvwriterchat -10:28 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @NikkiSyreeta Ah, I see. I did my first drama pilot in a week. #tvwriterchat -10:28 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @NikkiSyreeta and can read. Not your mom. #tvwriterchat -10:28 PM May 19th, 2013

IngridElkner I have to finish breaking a 6-minute procedural, write synopsis, treatment, outline and 1st draft before tomorrow. *sweating* #tvwriterchat -10:27 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @authorjamie ambush my inner editor with speed #tvwriterchat -10:27 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie To finish your first draft. We start rewriting on June 9. RT @Tim_K_Aucoin: @authorJamie Three weeks to what? #tvwriterchat -10:27 PMMay 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @authorJamie Three weeks? I think that's doable. #tvwriterchat -10:27 PM May 19th, 2013

ViaReach I have a plot that keeps shifting by adding new great plot points. When can I say enough is enough? #tvwriterchat -10:27 PM May 19th, 2013

scfMITO @ChristinaDM2066 The Pilot for House was full of it. I was surprised. But that was old school pilot. #tvwriterchat -10:27 PM May 19th, 2013

SarahAlexis4 @scfMITO That's great to keep in mind. #tvwriterchat -10:27 PM May 19th, 2013

Tim_K_Aucoin @authorJamie Three weeks to what? #tvwriterchat -10:27 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @InfamousArts Yeah but like say some people you know won't like it or won't say anything positive no matter what. #tvwriterchat -10:26 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @seancampbell you should pick someone who at least likes to read..... #tvwriterchat -10:26 PM May 19th, 2013

SarahAlexis4 @authorViviAnna :) #tvwriterchat -10:26 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie You have 3 weeks. RT @NikkiSyreeta: So goal this week is to write first draft in 7 days. #tvwriterchat -10:26 PM May 19th, 2013

SarahAlexis4 @InfamousArts Good one about creating a strong world. #tvwriterchat -10:26 PM May 19th, 2013

ChristinaDM2066 @scfMITO I agree. I've seen that so much if very popular shows. It surprised me. #tvwriterchat -10:25 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @authorjamie try that....if you get me the model..I can look it up for you... #tvwriterchat -10:25 PM May 19th, 2013

InfamousArts @SeanCampbell I was told "whoever will read it quickly" haha #tvwriterchat -10:25 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @authorViviAnna I can't wait to read it. @sarahalexis4 @grayjones @zacsanford #tvwriterchat -10:25 PM May 19th, 2013

_BrittanyB_ @MaryGuzman Exactly! And it costs money! Ha ha, I'm poor! Sitting in Burger King right now using their wi-fi! #tvwriterchat -10:24 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta So goal this week is to write first draft in 7 days. #tvwriterchat -10:24 PM May 19th, 2013

ChristinaDM2066 @SeanCampbell good idea. I forgot all the little tricks #tvwriterchat -10:24 PM May 19th, 2013

fundmysitcom @JonFour Why not to a pro? #tvwriterchat -10:24 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell We should do one of these chats about what makes a good person to show early drafts to. #tvwriterchat -10:24 PM May 19th, 2013

ViaReach @patontv Hey partner, we still need to share our scripts. Send me yours anytime. #tvwriterchat -10:24 PM May 19th, 2013

scfMITO I really try to be careful with exposition, showing more than telling. I hate to hear characters tell me who another char is #tvwriterchat -10:23 PMMay 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @authorjamie You still should be able to do it. its either draft or greyscale mode... but all printers can be setup in windows #tvwriterchat -10:23 PM May 19th, 2013

InfamousArts Objective #1 create a believable world, #2 intro main char and their wants, #3 show their lazy & futile attempts #tvwriterchat -10:23 PM May 19th, 2013

MaryGuzman @_BrittanyB_ because if you do a rewrite you have to re register #tvwriterchat -10:23 PM May 19th, 2013

JonFour @fundmysitcom To clarify: One CASUAL reader, like a family member or friend. Wouldn't show a first draft to a pro. #tvwriterchat -10:23 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @ViaReach You can always strengthen the writing on the rewrite. #tvwriterchat -10:23 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @ChristinaDM2066 Maybe if you set the text color to like a light blue and print it on a laser printer it'll come out lighter? #tvwriterchat -10:22 PM May 19th, 2013

art1032 RT @authorJamie: Don't forget to write to your "act outs." Make them strong, so the reader wants to read the next act. #tvwriterchat -10:22 PMMay 19th, 2013

_BrittanyB_ @margeryscott I waited until my screenplay was polished and ready before registering. #tvwriterchat -10:22 PM May 19th, 2013

ViaReach If you write the 1st draft to the breaks and time format, then edit for story, do you find yourself fluffing up parts to fit? #tvwriterchat -10:22 PMMay 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @margeryscott I would 1st draft, you can even register your outline #tvwriterchat -10:22 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @ChristinaDM2066 Agreed....work can afford it :) #tvwriterchat -10:22 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @NikkiSyreeta HP laser of some kind. #tvwriterchat -10:22 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna I'm going to make @authorJamie @sarahalexis4 @grayjones @zacsanford read my 1st draft whether they want to or not. LOL #tvwriterchat -10:21 PM May 19th, 2013

SarahAlexis4 @authorViviAnna Yes, often so helpful to see it through somebody's fresh eyes and different/detached POV. #tvwriterchat -10:21 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie Don't forget to write to your "act outs." Make them strong, so the reader wants to read the next act. #tvwriterchat -10:21 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @authorjamie what kind of printer to you have? #tvwriterchat -10:21 PM May 19th, 2013

margeryscott At what point do you register your script? Before showing it to other people or when it's finished? #tvwriterchat -10:21 PM May 19th, 2013

ChristinaDM2066 @NikkiSyreeta when I can I print at work. i hate wasting my ink. lol #tvwriterchat -10:21 PM May 19th, 2013

Chrysaleigh I have to head out early, great convo with everyone. Take care. #tvwriterchat -10:21 PM May 19th, 2013

Tim_K_Aucoin @ElectPlusTVChat Cool! As long as it's only online stalking ;) #tvwriterchat -10:21 PM May 19th, 2013

SarahAlexis4 Anybody else have objectives to achieve in first drafts that you keep in mind while writing? #tvwriterchat -10:20 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie Exactly! RT @authorViviAnna: I like having a read of my 1st draft, so I know if I'm completely off base before I rewrite #tvwriterchat -10:20 PMMay 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna I like having a read of my 1st draft, so I know if I'm completely off base before I rewrite #tvwriterchat -10:20 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie Even when I was in my UCLA class, I went to my "go to" people and got opinions. I owe them BIG TIME! #tvwriterchat -10:20 PM May 19th, 2013

art1032 Someone said it earlier I think.....but if you write a good, complete,outline,the 1st draft is practically written for you. :) #tvwriterchat -10:20 PMMay 19th, 2013

ChristinaDM2066 @NikkiSyreeta good to know, thanks for the tips #tvwriterchat -10:20 PM May 19th, 2013

ElectPlusTVChat @Secretoriginz Generally toilet humor. ;) #tvwriterchat -10:19 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @SeanCampbell lOL, yes do a spellcheck on it for sure before sending it to anyone. Don't send out garbage #tvwriterchat -10:19 PM May 19th, 2013

JonFour @fundmysitcom I would get 1 reader to read my first draft. Just so I know if there's a glaring plothole/bad idea in there. #tvwriterchat -10:19 PMMay 19th, 2013

SarahAlexis4 @IngridElkner Great ones to keep in mind! #tvwriterchat -10:19 PM May 19th, 2013

ElectPlusTVChat @GCGeek Thanks! I'll stalk @Tim_K_Aucoin too. #tvwriterchat -10:19 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @NikkiSyreeta I wish my laser printer had "draft" printing. @ChristinaDM2066 #tvwriterchat -10:19 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @fundmysitcom other writers, your partner in this program, ask the others in your group #tvwriterchat -10:19 PM May 19th, 2013

Secretoriginz @ElectPlusTVChat What kinds of ideas are they? (Genre) #tvwriterchat -10:18 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @ChristinaDM2066 printer setting to draft....no need in wasting ink on something you're going to write all over #tvwriterchat -10:18 PM May 19th, 2013

IngridElkner @SarahAlexis4 *What's the character's goal? Do they actively go for it in each sc? *What are the stakes? *What's the char arc? #tvwriterchat -10:18 PM May 19th, 2013

fundmysitcom @authorViviAnna Are those peeps in the business or friends? I´m a little shy bothering friends. #tvwriterchat -10:18 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @TVW_P A spellcheck at the very least. #tvwriterchat -10:18 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @Tim_K_Aucoin I don't remember who you were partnered with, but I think he's AWOL. #tvwriterchat -10:18 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @ChristinaDM2066 no problem...I just keep up that process until I get to the final. just remember to change your printer... #tvwriterchat -10:18 PM May 19th, 2013

Secretoriginz @Chrysaleigh IMO the vast majority of SciFi these days is weighted to drama with very little humor. They've lost the fun #tvwriterchat -10:18 PM May 19th, 2013

margeryscott I should have written my draft before the chat tonight. I'd have had a lot more questions. I don't know yet what I don't know. #tvwriterchat -10:17 PM May 19th, 2013

GCGeek @ElectPlusTVChat I'll read anything you've written and provide feedback on any aspect you prefer. #tvwriterchat -10:17 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie And if you want to write for TV, you have to be able to write an outline. #tvwriterchat -10:17 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna objectives with 1st draft. 1. get story out 2. get idea of act breaks 3. make sure story makes sense 4. arc out character line #tvwriterchat -10:17 PM May 19th, 2013

TVW_P To me, I want a second pass before letting anyone see it, because the 1st is so raw, rough, & probably full of holes/mistakes. #tvwriterchat -10:17 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @IngridElkner You smell like a good source of potassium? Huh? #tvwriterchat -10:17 PM May 19th, 2013

ElectPlusTVChat I have no "partner" to bounce my draft/ideas with...it was the draw of this program. #tvwriterchat -10:17 PM May 19th, 2013

Tim_K_Aucoin @authorJamie Did I lose my partner? I forgot who it was. #tvwriterchat -10:17 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie This is why knowing your characters, and writing the detailed outline are important. They make the 1st draft much easier. #tvwriterchat -10:17 PM May 19th, 2013

IngridElkner @SeanCampbell hahaha, and I clicked it too. Probably gonna have the federal police bust through my door now. #tvwriterchat -10:16 PM May 19th, 2013

mediadivaTV How does everyone handle timing of act breaks/turning points? I layout the script pages first so I know how much space I have #tvwriterchat -10:16 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @Tim_K_Aucoin The House template in Final Draft is a good basic one. The One hour pilot template is screwed up in mine somehow #tvwriterchat -10:16 PM May 19th, 2013

ChristinaDM2066 @NikkiSyreeta Thanks #tvwriterchat -10:16 PM May 19th, 2013

GCGeek @JonFour When you're ready to trade pilots for a read, just let me know. Mine is not written, I mean ready, yet. :) #tvwriterchat -10:16 PM May 19th, 2013

IngridElkner @authorViviAnna Friends: "Ingrid, why you smell like banana?" Me: "Waaaaaaaa!" #tvwriterchat -10:16 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @ElectPlusTVChat @Tim_K_Aucoin You two could partner up and bounce off each other. Both writing comedy. #tvwriterchat -10:16 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @ChristinaDM2066 ....then I start rewriting on the printout. I only use blue pen...contrast the black ink and softer than red #tvwriterchat -10:16 PM May 19th, 2013

InfamousArts @NikkiSyreeta the luxurious but affordable pen tho I thought I broke it when i pressed on it the first time haha #tvwriterchat -10:16 PM May 19th, 2013

_BrittanyB_ @authorViviAnna I just emailed a screenplay I wrote to Cassie Scerbo's manager Friday after Cassie agreed to read it! #tvwriterchat -10:16 PM May 19th, 2013

ChristinaDM2066 @NikkiSyreeta thanks, I'll try them. #tvwriterchat -10:16 PM May 19th, 2013

scfMITO @IngridElkner You need me : ) LOL! #tvwriterchat -10:15 PM May 19th, 2013

ElectPlusTVChat @Tim_K_Aucoin Exactly what I do. Find a format of something similar. #tvwriterchat -10:15 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @ElectPlusTVChat See if anyone else is looking for someone to brainstorm and write with a partner. #tvwriterchat -10:15 PM May 19th, 2013

14Shari @ElectPlusTVChat keep writing #tvwriterchat -10:15 PM May 19th, 2013

SarahAlexis4 If we were trying to compile a list of objectives to achieve in our first drafts, what would you include to keep in mind? #tvwriterchat -10:15 PM May 19th, 2013

Chrysaleigh @ElectPlusTVChat That's a really good question. We can have others in the program read as well right? #tvwriterchat -10:15 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @ElectPlusTVChat Take their names off and keep going. #tvwriterchat -10:15 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @fundmysitcom I'd get 2 peeps to read your 1st draft. #tvwriterchat -10:15 PM May 19th, 2013

TVW_P I wouldn't show anyone my first draft. Anyone. It's vomit after all... whole point of it. #tvwriterchat -10:15 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @CindyPCarroll Yeah we sit and riff on it at work the whole time. #tvwriterchat -10:15 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @ChristinaDM2066 I copy all my notes into the computer program...than print it out (on draft which doesn't use that much ink.. #tvwriterchat -10:15 PM May 19th, 2013

ChristinaDM2066 @mediadivaTV the right paper is hard to find. But I agree. #tvwriterchat -10:15 PM May 19th, 2013

IngridElkner @scfMITO No, I don't want someone supportive around. I want someone to give me stern looks and passive-aggressive comments. #tvwriterchat -10:15 PM May 19th, 2013

Tim_K_Aucoin Q: How do you choose how to format your pilot? Do you use a template from a similar show? #tvwriterchat -10:15 PM May 19th, 2013

ElectPlusTVChat What are we supposed to do if our "writing partner" has disappeared? Suggestions? #tvwriterchat -10:14 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @IngridElkner That wasn't supposed to be an actual hyperlink. #tvwriterchat -10:14 PM May 19th, 2013

TVW_P Please let's try to stay on topic of first drafts. Any other thoughts? #tvwriterchat -10:14 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @IngridElkner we could all take turns poking you with a banana, if you like. #tvwriterchat -10:14 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @ChristinaDM2066 @infamousarts papermate profile pen...smooth right out of the package....just pop the plastic tip #tvwriterchat -10:14 PM May 19th, 2013

fundmysitcom How many people do you guys bother with the first draft? #tvwriterchat -10:14 PM May 19th, 2013

yvette_tracy @Tim_K_Aucoin That's good Tim. Sometimes you've got to scrap it if it doesn't work. I'm doing the same thing. #tvwriterchat -10:14 PM May 19th, 2013

mediadivaTV @ChristinaDM2066 the right pen and even the paper makes all the difference. Smoother = speedier. #tvwriterchat -10:14 PM May 19th, 2013

IngridElkner @MaryGuzman My chair has wheels... And would mean I'd sit in front of my computer more. #tvwriterchat -10:14 PM May 19th, 2013

ChristinaDM2066 @NikkiSyreeta I agree. Adding ideas in the merges. But how to you make the transition to the computer smooth? #tvwriterchat -10:13 PM May 19th, 2013

Secretoriginz One thing about some shows is they set up a prob that's persisted 4 a long time & the solution ends up being wayyy too simple #tvwriterchat -10:13 PM May 19th, 2013

ViaReach Hi Writer Peeps! Sorry I'm joining the chat late. The event I was working ran way over the planned time, but I made it. Phew! #tvwriterchat -10:13 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @IngridElkner http://t.co/JRCpP2MXc9 #tvwriterchat -10:13 PM May 19th, 2013

CindyPCarroll @SeanCampbell We gave up on Revolution because of the plot holes. #tvwriterchat -10:13 PM May 19th, 2013

scfMITO @IngridElkner Having someone around, that is supportive is good. #tvwriterchat -10:13 PM May 19th, 2013

IngridElkner @mediadivaTV I would be like a banana that got put at the bottom of the grocery bag. #tvwriterchat -10:13 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @scfMITO oh I'd love to talk to an actor, and get their take on scripts, what they want to read and what they skip over #tvwriterchat -10:13 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @Chrysaleigh I migh check it out. #tvwriterchat -10:13 PM May 19th, 2013

ChristinaDM2066 @InfamousArts A good pen is the way to go. You have to sharpen the pencil too much & it doesn't flow across the paper. #tvwriterchat -10:13 PM May 19th, 2013

IngridElkner @SeanCampbell Child labour laws, can't hire one. But I *could* adopt one... What's the website for that? #tvwriterchat -10:12 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @14Shari Not a fan of Revolution. It's on on my shift, and I hate everything I get paid to run at work ;) #tvwriterchat -10:12 PM May 19th, 2013

scfMITO My fiend is an actress and I learned a lot about character from her process of discovery. What she needs to know about #tvwriterchat -10:12 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @ChristinaDM2066 I have to write it out. crossing out words and circling. Its like building something...designing #tvwriterchat -10:11 PM May 19th, 2013

MaryGuzman @IngridElkner you can handcuff yourself to a chair I heard that works #tvwriterchat -10:11 PM May 19th, 2013

14Shari @SeanCampbell I love Continuum and Revolution #tvwriterchat -10:11 PM May 19th, 2013

Secretoriginz @authorJamie Yeah I often try to cast the roles in it so I can picture the characters/hear voices as I write #tvwriterchat #tvwriterchat -10:11 PM May 19th, 2013

mediadivaTV @IngridElkner oh me too! I'd be black & blue though. #tvwriterchat -10:11 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @IngridElkner Or a kid. #tvwriterchat -10:11 PM May 19th, 2013

Chrysaleigh @Secretoriginz Exactly, I agree. I think that's why I enjoy #SG1 so much. It's a good balance of the two #tvwriterchat -10:11 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @InfamousArts totally agree, I love how the pen feels in my hand and how the ink flows, I have to use a certain type of pen #tvwriterchat -10:11 PM May 19th, 2013

InfamousArts @jevanturner "emulate" you don't want to be sued now... #tvwriterchat -10:11 PM May 19th, 2013

CindyPCarroll @Chrysaleigh I've got episodes of #Continuum season 2 recorded right now. Haven't watched yet. Want to go back & re-watch S 1 #tvwriterchat -10:11 PM May 19th, 2013

TvLynne Found this helpful to touch base with when stuck - What is your show's template ? Alexis Epstein http://t.co/n3NskRBWHU #tvwriterchat -10:11 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @Chrysaleigh I hear good things about Continuum. It sounds like Time Trax to methough. How is it? #tvwriterchat -10:11 PM May 19th, 2013

Tim_K_Aucoin I like my new idea way better. It's the same theme though. It's a little out there, but everyone I've pitched it to likes it. #tvwriterchat -10:10 PM May 19th, 2013

IngridElkner I need to hire someone to stand in my lounge with a stick, and when I procrastinate, they poke me. Should I get an intern? #tvwriterchat -10:10 PM May 19th, 2013

InfamousArts @IngridElkner good idea! #tvwriterchat -10:10 PM May 19th, 2013

Secretoriginz @Chrysaleigh In my opinion the absolute best tv shows are ones that utilize both to equal effect #tvwriterchat -10:10 PM May 19th, 2013

jevanturner Many of my best characters are inspired by friends, gives them an incredible depth and makes me want to spend time writing! #tvwriterchat -10:10 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @authorJamie AGREE being married to an idea can be the downfall of your story, don't be afraid to change #tvwriterchat -10:10 PM May 19th, 2013

InfamousArts @ChristinaDM2066 handwriting just feels good! I like looking at crossed out words/ideas, no pencils! #tvwriterchat -10:10 PM May 19th, 2013

SarahAlexis4 @scfMITO That sounds like a cool way to think about it and get focused on the story. Like a conversation with a friend. #tvwriterchat -10:10 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @gregstorm thanks for dropping by #tvwriterchat -10:10 PM May 19th, 2013

stephlynn_smith Celtx (which I wrote my draft on) is refusing to open. Kind of panicking. :( #tvwriterchat -10:09 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @Secretoriginz That works too. #tvwriterchat -10:09 PM May 19th, 2013

Chrysaleigh I watched all of #Continuum and #SG1 to try to get both the comedy and drama into it. #tvwriterchat -10:09 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @JonFour I jsut write, but I AM mindful of my pg count and act breaks #tvwriterchat -10:09 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @ElectPlusTVChat that's a great idea #tvwriterchat -10:09 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie Don't be afraid to change ideas. Your first one isn't always your best. But once you start writing, try to stick it out. #tvwriterchat -10:09 PM May 19th, 2013

ChristinaDM2066 @NikkiSyreeta glad i'm not the only one out there handwriting first. #tvwriterchat -10:08 PM May 19th, 2013

Tim_K_Aucoin @SMyTurner Definitely. It's given me some ideas for my pilot. #tvwriterchat -10:08 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @GregStorm thanks for being here Greg!!! #tvwriterchat -10:08 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @seancampbell really? didn't know....got any names of programs? #tvwriterchat -10:08 PM May 19th, 2013

scfMITO @GregStorm Thanks! #tvwriterchat -10:08 PM May 19th, 2013

Secretoriginz @authorJamie Yeah I often try to cast the roles in it so I can picture the characters/hear voices as I write #tvwriterchat -10:08 PM May 19th, 2013

IngridElkner @TVW_P When Ellen was here, she got us to do a comedy exercise: think of last thing to make us laugh & write w/ our characters #tvwriterchat -10:08 PM May 19th, 2013

JonFour When you write your 1st draft, do you make an effort to get an appropriate page count or do you not care about too short/long? #tvwriterchat -10:08 PM May 19th, 2013

scfMITO I just imagine that I watched it last night and cutting it to pieces over coffee with a friend. That seems to get me focused. #tvwriterchat -10:08 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @Secretoriginz I had 2 ideas the instructor didn't like, then I came up with this one. #tvwriterchat -10:08 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @GregStorm interesting...I go back to pg 1 to read what I previously wrote to get the flow right #tvwriterchat -10:08 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @NikkiSyreeta They have text editors that lock out scrolling. #tvwriterchat -10:08 PM May 19th, 2013

GregStorm Hate to leave but @maryamstorm is hungry. Good luck with your 1st drafts. YOU CAN DO IT! #tvwriterchat -10:07 PM May 19th, 2013

SMyTurner @Tim_K_Aucoin Just in time for the reboot. If you're doing comedy, that show is a gold mine for study #tvwriterchat -10:07 PM May 19th, 2013

ElectPlusTVChat @authorJamie "sitting in room" helps with realistic dialogue too. #tvwriterchat -10:07 PM May 19th, 2013

GermaineJames @TVW_P Gack! No wonder we're all low on Vitamin D. I need a beach writing day! #tvwriterchat -10:07 PM May 19th, 2013

CindyPCarroll @Tim_K_Aucoin We've been watching Netflix like crazy too. Currently Psych. #tvwriterchat -10:07 PM May 19th, 2013

Secretoriginz @authorJamie did that just come to you or did you choose between a few different ideas? #tvwriterchat -10:07 PM May 19th, 2013

GCGeek @RWWFilm @authorJamie I haven't checked out the contests this year. I applied to fellowships last year. #tvwriterchat -10:07 PM May 19th, 2013

Tim_K_Aucoin @mediadivaTV Really? That's interesting. Good to know. #tvwriterchat -10:07 PM May 19th, 2013

mediadivaTV @Secretoriginz haha so true! #tvwriterchat -10:07 PM May 19th, 2013

art1032 @mbergamo1224 The writer in us all lol :) #tvwriterchat -10:07 PM May 19th, 2013

ChristinaDM2066 @Tim_K_Aucoin it's just easier for me to get to ideas out. #tvwriterchat -10:07 PM May 19th, 2013

Tim_K_Aucoin @authorJamie I've been watching Netflix tv like crazy lately. Currently watching Arrested Development. #tvwriterchat -10:06 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @ChristinaDM2066 I understand that. It gets hard in the computer because I can't SEE everything on the page. scrolling sucks #tvwriterchat -10:06 PM May 19th, 2013

TVW_P Handwriting naturally involves less editing, & for many, has better flow. Ellen Sandler recommends: never let pen leave page. #tvwriterchat -10:06 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @ElectPlusTVChat I put myself in the scene to write it. I can "see" everything I'm writing about as if it's on TV. #tvwriterchat -10:06 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @Tim_K_Aucoin I handwrite all my 75K novels first, for me it flows easier out of a pen, also cuz I have thoracic outlet syndr #tvwriterchat -10:06 PM May 19th, 2013

Secretoriginz @mediadivaTV In a Sorkin script that would go; Walking...walking...stop lean into office...walking walking walking... #tvwriterchat -10:06 PM May 19th, 2013

GregStorm .@authorViviAnna I've had to write quickly for agents + shows I've done, but I still go back to page 1 at each sitting. #tvwriterchat -10:06 PM May 19th, 2013

williammichaelt I spend time on the internet, watching tv (netflix, hulu, hbo go, etc.) Riddle me that. #tvwriterchat -10:06 PM May 19th, 2013

margeryscott @authorJamie I tried to do that with Downton Abbey and found out after I was hooked that they only had season 1. So annoyed. #tvwriterchat -10:06 PM May 19th, 2013

IngridElkner Sheldon Bull recommends writing a sitcom as a drama first, so you write in thoughts and feelings instead of gags and set-ups. #tvwriterchat -10:06 PM May 19th, 2013

mediadivaTV @Tim_K_Aucoin writing by hand sometimes frees up my creativity. Typing is left-brain. #tvwriterchat -10:06 PM May 19th, 2013

mbergamo1224 I can't watch TV the same anymore (since I'm now studying it) - always analyzing #tvwriterchat -10:06 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @Tim_K_Aucoin Whatever extracts it from your brain easier, I suppose. #tvwriterchat -10:06 PM May 19th, 2013

art1032 @Chrysaleigh I do that too, and also picture a particular person playing the part helps me:) #tvwriterchat -10:06 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @Secretoriginz I wrote pilot for my UCLA class, and instructor pushed me to dig for better story. It's what I came up with. #tvwriterchat -10:05 PM May 19th, 2013

arbutus_films @mediadivaTV I do the same thing #tvwriterchat -10:05 PM May 19th, 2013

ElectPlusTVChat Try 'sitting in room' while you're writing a scene...it helps. #tvwriterchat -10:05 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna sometimes I will overwrite a scene, add in too much action, my 1st drafts are always wordy #tvwriterchat -10:05 PM May 19th, 2013

williammichaelt @TVW_P how many of those 17 hours are spent on cats and puppies? #tvwriterchat -10:05 PM May 19th, 2013

CindyPCarroll @authorViviAnna Cool. That helps. #tvwriterchat -10:05 PM May 19th, 2013

Tim_K_Aucoin Not hating on it or anything, but what's the point of hand writing if you're just going to write it on computer anyway? #tvwriterchat -10:05 PM May 19th, 2013

mediadivaTV Another option I try: write the scene in action only, then come back and add dialogue as necessary. #tvwriterchat -10:04 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @margeryscott Get Netflix streaming and watch full seasons at a time. It's really helpful. #tvwriterchat @TVW_P -10:04 PM May 19th, 2013

SarahAlexis4 @ChristinaDM2066 Very cool that you identified an issue and are working on it to improve your process! #tvwriterchat -10:04 PM May 19th, 2013

GregStorm Make sure your pilots say something! Don't just write to write. Have a point of view that will illicit some sort of emotion #tvwriterchat -10:04 PM May 19th, 2013

Chrysaleigh I sometimes have a hard time balancing dialogue and body language. When that happens, I close my eyes and envision the chars #tvwriterchat -10:04 PM May 19th, 2013

Secretoriginz @authorJamie what drew you to that? #tvwriterchat -10:04 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @TVW_P I DVR just about everything.... weekends are filled with catching up. I try to write mostly during the week. #tvwriterchat -10:04 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @CindyPCarroll when I adapted my book into a pilot, I left out A LOT. Only included pivotal scenes and even wrote new ones #tvwriterchat -10:04 PM May 19th, 2013

margeryscott @TVW_P I spend more time on the internet than watching TV. Maybe I should be watching more so I can write better. #tvwriterchat -10:04 PM May 19th, 2013

SarahAlexis4 @SMyTurner Ah, yes, the Emotion Thesaurus. #tvwriterchat -10:04 PM May 19th, 2013

scfMITO @SarahAlexis4 Just wanting to make sure the back ground is authentic for a medical drama. #tvwriterchat -10:04 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie *smooches* RT @authorViviAnna: @authorJamie it's AWESOME @secretoriginz #tvwriterchat -10:04 PM May 19th, 2013

TVW_P Neilsen reports average American spends 17 hrs/week on internet. So 51 hrs between TV & internet every week. #tvwriterchat -10:03 PM May 19th, 2013

SarahAlexis4 @mediadivaTV Good one, thank you for sharing that! #tvwriterchat -10:03 PM May 19th, 2013

ElectPlusTVChat @SarahAlexis4 My problems seemed to be solved by a complete notecards (outline.) #tvwriterchat -10:03 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @authorJamie it's AWESOME @secretoriginz #tvwriterchat -10:03 PM May 19th, 2013

MaryGuzman @blvarga I'm sending it to you to read. Do you have time? #tvwriterchat -10:03 PM May 19th, 2013

ChristinaDM2066 @SarahAlexis4 I'm so disorganized. I handwrite 1st, then get overwhelmed when I put it into the computer. working that out #tvwriterchat -10:03 PM May 19th, 2013

IngridElkner @mediadivaTV We should beat them up. Time for a bit of the ultra-violence? #tvwriterchat -10:03 PM May 19th, 2013

SMyTurner @SarahAlexis4 Making sure I'm using body language and not dialogue to the fullest. Angela Ackerman all the way! #tvwriterchat -10:03 PM May 19th, 2013

CindyPCarroll .@SarahAlexis4 Because I'm adapting a book I'm having a problem on what to include and what to leave out from the book. #tvwriterchat -10:03 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @GregStorm ah, you edit as you go.... so you are not a vomit drafter? #tvwriterchat -10:03 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @Secretoriginz It's a DEA agent one hour drama. #tvwriterchat -10:02 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @TVW_P Yeah but for the average american that includes like 20 hours of music shows. doesn't count. #tvwriterchat -10:02 PM May 19th, 2013

mediadivaTV @SarahAlexis4 problem: using dialogue to tell the story. Solution: get a second pair of eyes on it for feedback. #tvwriterchat -10:02 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @authorvivianna I will soon as I write it #tvwriterchat -10:02 PM May 19th, 2013

Secretoriginz @authorJamie Interesting. What's the premise again? #tvwriterchat -10:02 PM May 19th, 2013

_BrittanyB_ Bragging on myself. I emailed a screenplay I wrote to Cassie Scerbo's manager Friday after she graciously agreed to read it! #tvwriterchat -10:02 PM May 19th, 2013

GregStorm .@authorViviAnna I also start back a page 1 every time I sit down to write, so there's that. #tvwriterchat -10:02 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @authorJamie yeah! I'm just finishing my feature for my manager, then I am eager to get busy on it #tvwriterchat -10:02 PM May 19th, 2013

TVW_P Americans spend 34 hours/week watching TV, 5 hours more than Canadians. #tvwriterchat -10:01 PM May 19th, 2013

blvarga @MaryGuzman How is your draft coming along? #tvwriterchat #tvwriterchat -10:01 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @Secretoriginz No bible. That comes after the sale. #tvwriterchat -10:01 PM May 19th, 2013

SMyTurner In improving my draft, do any of you guys know a place where I can get people to read my screenplay? Always looking for some #tvwriterchat -10:01 PM May 19th, 2013

SarahAlexis4 What problems does everybody feel they come up against when writing a first draft? & what solutions have you possibly found? #tvwriterchat -10:01 PM May 19th, 2013

yvette_tracy @mbergamo1224 I know I had to change my idea. I wouldn't be able o regroup without the outline! #tvwriterchat -10:01 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta SeanCampbell @TVW_P LOL I really seriously...only 11 hours? #tvwriterchat -10:01 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @authorViviAnna I'm actually working on it after chat. I'm in total writing mode. @thelipsolution is on vacation next week. #tvwriterchat -10:01 PM May 19th, 2013

Tim_K_Aucoin @SeanCampbell True dat. I'm surprised by that stat, 11 hours isn't that much. #tvwriterchat -10:01 PM May 19th, 2013

IngridElkner Learning how important your character's goal, development, and the theme are are great for knowing what to cut. #tvwriterchat -10:01 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna people, are you getting your partners to read your 1st drafts? Do it. #tvwriterchat -10:01 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @IngridElkner You bad. #tvwriterchat -10:01 PM May 19th, 2013

RWWFilm @GCGeek @authorJamie Off topic, but curious to know everyone's thoughts on the Industry Insider TV Contest. Anyone submitting? #tvwriterchat -10:01 PM May 19th, 2013

mediadivaTV @IngridElkner my peers whine about 1500 word essays. I call them wimps. #tvwriterchat -10:00 PM May 19th, 2013

InfamousArts One part that I had to flow with was creating the side char motivation in a scene that was interesting #tvwriterchat -10:00 PM May 19th, 2013

williammichaelt @TVW_P do you have those stats for Americans? Wish I could spend 29 hrs/wk watching TV! #tvwriterchat -10:00 PM May 19th, 2013

MaryGuzman RT @TVW_P: 29 hrs/week watching TV and 11 hrs/week on the internet. 40 hrs... Cut half, get 20 hrs writing time. #tvwriterchat -10:00 PM May 19th, 2013

CindyPCarroll @TVW_P Because of writing deadlines we've been PVRing everything and waiting until the weekend to watch. #tvwriterchat -10:00 PM May 19th, 2013

TVW_P Chat is half over! More thoughts, tips or questions about writing the first draft? #tvwriterchat -10:00 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @stephlynn_smith I thought so ;P #tvwriterchat -10:00 PM May 19th, 2013

art1032 @authorJamie Absolutely sell that SUCKER>>>MOVE LOL :) #tvwriterchat -10:00 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @TVW_P Only 11 hours on the internet? Does that include gaming time? pfft. Amateurs. #tvwriterchat -9:59 PM May 19th, 2013

Secretoriginz @authorJamie So its it pretty self contained or is there a bible for it? #tvwriterchat -9:59 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @authorJamie get me that script we're working on and we'll sell that and you can move... ;-) #tvwriterchat -9:59 PM May 19th, 2013

fundmysitcom 30 pages too long is really a lot... That´s almost a two episode pilot. #tvwriterchat -9:59 PM May 19th, 2013

IngridElkner @mediadivaTV In high school, a teacher would say we had to write a 2,000 word essay. Others would groan. I'd write 3,000. haha #tvwriterchat -9:59 PM May 19th, 2013

stephlynn_smith @SeanCampbell Oh man. A Korra spec. Awesome. #tvwriterchat -9:59 PM May 19th, 2013

GCGeek @authorJamie Insane weather your way (again). Stay safe! #tvwriterchat -9:59 PM May 19th, 2013

ChristinaDM2066 @scfMITO working on it, that's why I was late. Was on a role. #tvwriterchat -9:58 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie Thanks for the safe thoughts and prayers. Now I need to sell my pilot, so I can MOVE! lol #tvwriterchat -9:58 PM May 19th, 2013

TVW_P Average Canadian spends 29 hrs/week watching TV and 11 hrs/week on the internet. 40 hrs... Cut half, get 20 hrs writing time. #tvwriterchat -9:58 PM May 19th, 2013

Secretoriginz @authorJamie Might want to invest in an underground bunker for them. #tvwriterchat -9:58 PM May 19th, 2013

KimBergie @authorJamie Basement, pillows, critters, bathtub...no stormchasing! #tvwriterchat -9:58 PM May 19th, 2013

mediadivaTV @IngridElkner I was so surprised, and realised how much more relaxed I could be about telling the story. #tvwriterchat -9:58 PM May 19th, 2013

yvette_tracy @authorJamie Hang in there Jamie! #tvwriterchat -9:58 PM May 19th, 2013

mbergamo1224 @yvette_tracy I agree. At times, the outline was annoying however it was SO worth it. #tvwriterchat -9:58 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @seancampbell Damn....30 pages too long. I did that with an adaptation....waaayyyy too long #tvwriterchat -9:58 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @IngridElkner I had to cut my one hour drama by 6 pages. #tvwriterchat -9:58 PM May 19th, 2013

SarahAlexis4 @IngridElkner I agree with you. I keep a special separate notebook document to keep all those little bits in for a project. #tvwriterchat -9:58 PM May 19th, 2013

CindyPCarroll All I can hear are fireworks right now. #tvwriterchat -9:58 PM May 19th, 2013

scfMITO @ChristinaDM2066 How is your draft coming along? #tvwriterchat -9:58 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @Secretoriginz Only be a hero for my horses if they were in danger. #tvwriterchat -9:57 PM May 19th, 2013

Secretoriginz @authorJamie Don't be a hero. #tvwriterchat -9:57 PM May 19th, 2013

mediadivaTV @authorViviAnna hahaha classic! #tvwriterchat -9:57 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna *hugs Jamie* tries to hide her under my bed #tvwriterchat -9:57 PM May 19th, 2013

MaryGuzman RT @_BrittanyB_: @Chrysaleigh Not at all! I tried writing 40 hours & treating my job as a hobby . . . Nice #tvwriterchat -9:57 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell My Korra spec for the Nickelodeon Fellowship was outlined in a week, wrote over 44 hour marathon, turned out30 pages too long. #tvwriterchat -9:57 PM May 19th, 2013

_BrittanyB_ @authorjamie Stay safe! #tvwriterchat -9:57 PM May 19th, 2013

IngridElkner @SarahAlexis4 We're encouraged away from dialogue & minutiae in planning, but when it's flowing you'd be a fool to block it. #tvwriterchat -9:57 PM May 19th, 2013

HouseOfJudea Great point @yvette_tracy outlines also act as foundation for 1 st draft. Excellent compass during editing phase as well. #tvwriterchat -9:56 PM May 19th, 2013

art1032 @authorJamie Aww be careful, dont hesitate to leave if u need to. :) #tvwriterchat -9:56 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @mediadivaTV LOL, I went about to write a 60 pg drama pilot once and ended up with a 30 min single cam comedy #tvwriterchat -9:56 PM May 19th, 2013

SarahAlexis4 @authorJamie Stay safe! Sending good thoughts that the storm passes without any damage. #tvwriterchat -9:56 PM May 19th, 2013

yvette_tracy @Tim_K_Aucoin You're a trooper Jamie! #tvwriterchat -9:56 PM May 19th, 2013

Chrysaleigh @authorJamie Thanks for the warning, will be keeping my finger's crossed for you. #tvwriterchat -9:56 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @authorjamie be safe out there. #tvwriterchat -9:55 PM May 19th, 2013

MaryGuzman @authorJamie be safe #tvwriterchat -9:55 PM May 19th, 2013

Secretoriginz One of the best things is when some new development that comes when writing fits perfectly w/ what u have already established #tvwriterchat -9:55 PM May 19th, 2013

_BrittanyB_ @Chrysaleigh Not at all! I tried writing 40 hours & treating my job as a hobby, but didn't work too well! #tvwriterchat -9:55 PM May 19th, 2013

mediadivaTV The first time I wrote a half hour script, I wrote so short that it ended at 11 pages. Symptom of writing short films. #tvwriterchat -9:55 PM May 19th, 2013

Tim_K_Aucoin Q: Should I write in the act breaks for a 30 page single cam? #tvwriterchat -9:55 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie If I disappear from the chat, it's because we lost electricity. It's getting hairy out there. #tvwriterchat -9:55 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @MaryGuzman that's great. Anything between 50 and 63 is great for a drama #tvwriterchat -9:55 PM May 19th, 2013

GCGeek @authorJamie I've only been focused on screenplay for ProSeries but I'm going to switch gears to this pilot. A nice break! #tvwriterchat -9:55 PM May 19th, 2013

SarahAlexis4 @IngridElkner True, but at least you're aware of doing it! #tvwriterchat -9:55 PM May 19th, 2013

Chrysaleigh @InfamousArts Very true, a simple want is the best motivation. I find if its a complicated want, it makes it difficult. #tvwriterchat -9:54 PM May 19th, 2013

yvette_tracy I've written a spec and attempted a pilot b4, but without a strong outline. Outlines help you get 1st draft done faster! #tvwriterchat -9:54 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @authorJamie true dat!! I iz waiting and hungry to write it #tvwriterchat -9:54 PM May 19th, 2013

MaryGuzman @authorViviAnna I ended up with 57 pages drama #tvwriterchat -9:54 PM May 19th, 2013

TvLynne Gee you guys have stalled, are quiet. Oops, knocked offline #tvwriterchat -9:53 PM May 19th, 2013

ChristinaDM2066 @scfMITO Thanks #tvwriterchat -9:53 PM May 19th, 2013

Secretoriginz (2/2) then I get to work on making something interesting out of that #tvwriterchat -9:53 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @jevanturner yup and its easier to edit something, then it is to edit nothing #tvwriterchat -9:53 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @authorViviAnna And I have to finish the screenplay I'm writing with this crazy great screenwriter, so she doesn't kill me. #tvwriterchat -9:53 PM May 19th, 2013

Secretoriginz Sometimes when I find something doesn't make sense I can incorporate it. Someone speaks 2 it not making sense (1/2) #tvwriterchat -9:53 PM May 19th, 2013

SarahAlexis4 @jevanturner Yes, very important to finish drafts/projects. We get better with each draft and new script we write. #tvwriterchat -9:53 PM May 19th, 2013

14Shari @authorViviAnna I think I'm short on it. Have 28 beats but I need to work the scenes more out #tvwriterchat -9:53 PM May 19th, 2013

fundmysitcom @authorViviAnna I hit 36 pages. But multicam sitcom is written double-spaced. #tvwriterchat -9:53 PM May 19th, 2013

InfamousArts If your char has a simple want, you can't stray too far from a good story. #tvwriterchat -9:53 PM May 19th, 2013

SMyTurner @authorViviAnna Yeah I have 30 exactly (without tag). Do rewrites normally add or shorten the length? #tvwriterchat -9:53 PM May 19th, 2013

IngridElkner @SarahAlexis4 It will be when I'm working professionally and have to hand in synopsis, treatment, outline...! #tvwriterchat -9:53 PM May 19th, 2013

GregStorm I totally agree RT @TvLynne: @NikkiSyreeta it is amazing how pen and paper can be a creativity release when typing stalls #tvwriterchat -9:52 PM May 19th, 2013

TVW_P If you stumble in your 1st draft it's likely from weak outline or lack of character homework. But barrel on anyway, fix later. #tvwriterchat -9:52 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @GregStorm we all have our process. It's all good. :-) #tvwriterchat -9:52 PM May 19th, 2013

Chrysaleigh @_BrittanyB_ I have a 40 hr work week with just my job, so I try to add about 12 hrs a week for writing. I know I'm insane. #tvwriterchat -9:52 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @authorViviAnna I'm just starting the first draft of this pilot. I'll finish new outline this week, then start on Wednesday. #tvwriterchat -9:52 PM May 19th, 2013

jevanturner Even if the draft is going to be terrible, it's still important to finish because it's probably not as bad as you think #tvwriterchat -9:52 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @margeryscott yup that's a good goal. Me too. #tvwriterchat -9:52 PM May 19th, 2013

TvLynne @NikkiSyreeta it is amazing how pen and paper can be a creativity release when typing stalls #tvwriterchat -9:47 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @ElectPlusTVChat EXACTLY!!! #tvwriterchat -9:46 PM May 19th, 2013

Secretoriginz stream of consciousness writing about whatever I need 2 write. I use alot of maybe this or maybe that happens & accept/reject #tvwriterchat -9:46 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @authorvivianna I'm using one of your techniques of writing...just writing, no research, no backstory...just writing #tvwriterchat -9:46 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @art1032 And that's okay if it works for you. #tvwriterchat -9:46 PM May 19th, 2013

ElectPlusTVChat This was the most detailed outlined I'd ever done and it made the 1st draft go quickly. Whole damned thing was already built! #tvwriterchat -9:46 PM May 19th, 2013

InfamousArts @jevanturner i think desc play a huge part in it too, if someone's a gritty det. their dialog will b read in that tone. u know #tvwriterchat -9:46 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @Secretoriginz So much easier when you figure it out before writing, but that doesn't always happen. #tvwriterchat -9:46 PM May 19th, 2013

LuBird323 @ElectPlusTVChat I started playing w/ it today. I feel like it could be life changing. Haha! #tvwriterchat -9:46 PM May 19th, 2013

mediadivaTV @SarahAlexis4 finishing that outline though... there's my downfall. #tvwriterchat -9:46 PM May 19th, 2013

MaryGuzman I like this 7 days idea, I'm moving to my second draft, 7 days, good goal #tvwriterchat -9:46 PM May 19th, 2013

art1032 My 1st draft consists of many different scenes going all over the place cuz that's how I roll lol #tvwriterchat -9:45 PM May 19th, 2013

jevanturner Magic happens when you finish a draft, like getting the border of a jigsaw puzzle in place. The rest is there, no worries! #tvwriterchat -9:45 PM May 19th, 2013

arbutus_films @TVW_P I always aim for that, but it doesn't always pan out #tvwriterchat -9:45 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @mediadivaTV For me it's the opposite. The more detailed the planning I think my brain says "Well, that's already done." #tvwriterchat -9:45 PM May 19th, 2013

Secretoriginz @authorJamie Sort of. Had already written some scenes that weren't connected to the plot point & it was time to write it #tvwriterchat -9:44 PM May 19th, 2013

Chrysaleigh I find the only way I can write a draft is if I give myself less than a week as my goal time. #tvwriterchat -9:44 PM May 19th, 2013

SarahAlexis4 @mediadivaTV Yes, the beauty of a strong outline. :) #tvwriterchat -9:44 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @14shari....pen and paper....I use software to rewrite #tvwriterchat -9:44 PM May 19th, 2013

GregStorm @scfMITO Why are you calculating those things? Have you given yourself a ceiling of how long you will be a writer? #tvwriterchat -9:44 PM May 19th, 2013

yvette_tracy @14Shari I use Final Draft #tvwriterchat -9:44 PM May 19th, 2013

williammichaelt @LuBird323 I do and use it all the time :) #tvwriterchat -9:42 PM May 19th, 2013

Chrysaleigh Yeah I've found that I write most of it, then I go back and rework things if they aren't flowing #tvwriterchat -9:40 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @SarahAlexis4 so earlier and get started. The momentum helps carry me through the day and keeps me going. #tvwriterchat -9:36 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @14shari yes I did.....do you have it? #tvwriterchat -9:35 PM May 19th, 2013

SarahAlexis4 Often when I stumble on something during 1st draft, I'll scribble note or question in a separate notebook to address later. #tvwriterchat -9:35 PM May 19th, 2013

mbergamo1224 Biggest tip: You don't need to write each scene in order. You can go by storyline and then paste it all together later. #tvwriterchat -9:35 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @TVW_P yes...I find that helpful #tvwriterchat -9:35 PM May 19th, 2013

scfMITO @SarahAlexis4 I am a serious split personality. One part hungry writer, one part drill sergeant! #tvwriterchat -9:35 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell @SarahAlexis4 I learned when it comes to the first draft not to wait until I get home from work. I wake up like an hour or #tvwriterchat -9:35 PM May 19th, 2013

TVW_P The 2nd draft is about rewriting. 1st draft is the first time your story hits the page. #tvwriterchat -9:35 PM May 19th, 2013

InfamousArts @CindyPCarroll same thing sorta happened to me, peeps said to keep going, be different/better #tvwriterchat -9:35 PM May 19th, 2013

williammichaelt @scfMITO I would go as far as to say falls apart, but there have definitely been some changes. #tvwriterchat -9:35 PM May 19th, 2013

SMyTurner @scfMITO Yeah my outline only bears a small resemblance to my first draft #tvwriterchat -9:35 PM May 19th, 2013

14Shari @NikkiSyreeta yes it's morning. You asked for the site? #tvwriterchat -9:35 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie @TVW_P Yes! If I'm stuck, or maybe need more research, I put a line of **************** and highlight if I can. Then move on. #tvwriterchat -9:35 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @scfmito Yes I get that all the time...I keep getting new ideas and direction changes #tvwriterchat -9:35 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @scfMITO all the time. I find that sometimes for me the outline can be restricting, so just write it, then go back and edit #tvwriterchat -9:34 PM May 19th, 2013

ElectPlusTVChat Advice: Trust your outline and note cards. You've done the work already...time to churn it out. This is the fun part. #tvwriterchat -9:34 PM May 19th, 2013

CindyPCarroll @SarahAlexis4 Tip that works for me, just write, no editing. Give yourself permission to write crap then go back and fix. #tvwriterchat -9:34 PM May 19th, 2013

TvLynne @TVW_P hehe it came out like a big ole hairball. #firstdraft #tvwriterchat #billthecat -9:34 PM May 19th, 2013

GregStorm @stephlynn_smith Don't let that hold you back. Just make sure to not answer all your questions in the pilot. #tvwriterchat -9:34 PM May 19th, 2013

MaryGuzman Q: The first draft is something your going to rewrite, correct? #tvwriterchat -9:34 PM May 19th, 2013

14Shari Do the job, edit later #tvwriterchat -9:34 PM May 19th, 2013

blvarga RT @TVW_P: Biggest tip for first draft - vomit it out, don't be tempted to edit. #tvwriterchat -9:34 PM May 19th, 2013

TVW_P If you get stuck, don't be afraid to write placeholder scenes. "Argument here," or similar. #tvwriterchat -9:34 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @14shari hey shari....good morning #tvwriterchat -9:34 PM May 19th, 2013

authorJamie My best tip for the first draft is: DON'T LOOK BACK! Just keep writing. No editing. #tvwriterchat -9:34 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna I'm looking forward to writing my 1st draft. Haven't done it yet. I'm a bit behind #tvwriterchat -9:34 PM May 19th, 2013

SMyTurner @stephlynn_smith Have you developed that before writing the pilot? I'm still not sure what to do about that #tvwriterchat -9:34 PM May 19th, 2013

InfamousArts First draft was fun, though I'm crossing my fingers that the feedback/suggestions won't blow it up haha #tvwriterchat -9:34 PM May 19th, 2013

art1032 @authorJamie @NikkiSyreeta The inner editor is a pain in the a!@# lol #tvwriterchat -9:33 PM May 19th, 2013

NikkiSyreeta @authorjamie I try...but the "craft" keeps creeping in...all the things I've learned #tvwriterchat -9:33 PM May 19th, 2013

scfMITO my hand written notes and outlines fall apart when I type my draft, it's a new story! Anyone experiencing this? #tvwriterchat -9:33 PM May 19th, 2013

margeryscott @TVW_P That's the hard part for me. I always edit as I go. #tvwriterchat -9:33 PM May 19th, 2013

SarahAlexis4 What tips have you guys found help you get through your first draft? Let's share? #tvwriterchat -9:33 PM May 19th, 2013

fundmysitcom RT @TVW_P: Biggest tip for first draft - vomit it out, dont be tempted to edit. #tvwriterchat -9:33 PM May 19th, 2013

arbutus_films Hey everyone. My first draft has helped refocus on some of the plot points that seemed to work in the outline #tvwriterchat -9:33 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @SeanCampbell I agree. It's painful to write it #tvwriterchat -9:33 PM May 19th, 2013

stephlynn_smith Can't quite decide how much of a series arc I could/should hint at in my pilot. #tvwriterchat -9:32 PM May 19th, 2013

TVW_P Biggest tip for first draft - vomit it out, don't be tempted to edit. #tvwriterchat -9:32 PM May 19th, 2013

SeanCampbell I find the first draft to always be the most painful part to get out of my brain. #tvwriterchat -9:32 PM May 19th, 2013

authorViviAnna @NikkiSyreeta yeah, that's the hard part #tvwriterchat -9:32 PM May 19th, 2013
